special occasions

Well, it seems like I have fallen off the wagon on posts again – but I am not giving up on The Lipstick Giraffe and I hope you aren’t either!

In this entry I really want to open up a discussion about special occasions – and what defines that.

You often hear people say, “Oh, I’m saving that for a special occasion.” In fact, I even said it last night.

At a wedding I attended last week at the Old Sugar Mill, we were drinking wine from Carvalho Family Winery. I fell in love with the Old Vine Zinfandel they were serving and said right then and there that I was going to buy a bottle. I think it’s important to know that I am not a wine connoisseur and seldom ever purchase bottles, but I said I was going to drink it on a special occasion.

I had a mediocre day yesterday and was pretty excited to get home and kick back. I turned on my Christmas tree, turned on the heater and said, “You know, I’m going to open that bottle of wine up tonight.”

The reason I chose a chilly Wednesday night was because I suddenly felt a compelling feeling  – every day is a special occasion. It’s something that my grandmother told me, but it had gone in the database of all of the lessons you learn from your elders.

It is so important to seize the day.  There are a lot of people who would’ve done nearly anything for one more day to do the things that we save for special occasions.

I am not encouraging people to live their lives without consequence,  like there’ s no tomorrow and make rash and foolish decisions. I’m more encouraging people to live their lives like there’s no tomorrow and if there is tomorrow, be grateful that you have another day to do something else that you’ve wanted to do. Or if you fail at something, you have another opportunity to succeed.

So whether it’s a nice necklace, a pair of kicks, or a bottle of wine from a tasting at a wedding, don’t save it for a special occasion – live in the moment, and enjoy it now.
