Where to Eat, Stay & Play on South Padre Island

If you think South Padre Island is just a spring break spot, think again. I’ve visited three times in the past year, once during spring break and most recently this fall, and each visit showed me a different side of this coastal gem

During spring, the island is buzzing with energy, music and activity, folks young and old lining the streets. By fall, it transforms into something softer, relaxed yet still very lively, with perfect weather and a slower pace that lets you soak it all in.

Because I work with Visit South Padre Island as a client, I’ve had the unique opportunity to explore both sides of the island — for work and for fun. Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway, a family trip or a weekend with friends, SPI offers a mix of ease, adventure and surprisingly stylish spots to unwind. And when it comes to things to do on the island, there’s something for every type of traveler.

Where to Stay on South Padre Island

Located right on the beach, Margaritaville Beach Resort South Padre Island delivers the kind of easy luxury that works for everyone — families, couples, or groups traveling for meetings or events.

The property blends the laid-back vibe of the Margaritaville brand with a more elevated feel. Rooms are bright and comfortable, the service is friendly, and the beds are exceptionally cozy. After full days on the island, that matters. 🙂

There’s plenty to do onsite, too! From the pool and bar areas with beach views, to meeting rooms for those mixing business and leisure. And you can’t beat the location. The property is just steps from the sand, with everything you need within walking distance.

Where to Eat and Drink on South Padre Island

South Padre Island’s dining scene is casual, creative and full of local flavor. You’ll find everything from waterfront seafood to craft cocktails worth writing home about.

  • Captain’s Cove — Waterfront dining tucked just off the main strip. Great for fresh oysters, and a relaxed meal. They have daily specials/themes including all day happy hour on Mondays.
  • Viva — Local favorite for Tex-Mex and island-inspired fare. EVERYTHING is good here.
  • Grapevine Cafe — I’ve only been here for breakfast and it hits EVERY.SINGLE.TIME. Order Banana’s Foster pancakes for the table. You won’t be sorry.
  • Padre Island Brewing Co. — Classic and casual, with solid pub food and locally brewed beer. Order a flight and find a new fav.
  • Mahi Nic — Super laid-back eatery near the marina serving fresh bites. Don’t miss the Dockside Nachos.
  • Driftwood Landing — Simple little cocktail bar on the bay with some of the best drinks on the island — perfect for a sunset sip.
  • SPI Wine Bar — An intimate spot for wine lovers, with boutique bottles, small bites, and a relaxed island vibe.

Local favorites not to miss:

  • Wanna Wanna — Grab a Turbo Piña Colada…so good. Sip it slowly.
  • Clayton’s Beach Bar — The ultimate beach bar experience. This place gets packed on special events!
  • Café on the Beach — Go for the view and order the Caesar salad. Yes, seriously
  • Yummies Bistro – Creative and delicious breakfast dishes await. Order the pecan coffee.

Top Things to Do on South Padre Island

There’s no shortage of beauty on South Padre Island. If you’re planning your trip, begin with the places that show off the island’s best views and natural wonders.

Sea Turtle Inc
Dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of sea turtles, this organization has become one of the most meaningful places to visit on the island. Visitors can learn about ongoing rescue efforts and see rehabilitated turtles up close. Learn more at seaturtleinc.org and check out their playlists, too!

South Padre Island Nature Center & Alligator Sanctuary
A peaceful spot with elevated boardwalks, this center is a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. It also plays an important role in education and wildlife preservation. Details are on their website.

Isla Tours Dolphin Tours
I joined Isla Tours for a dolphin watching excursion and saw several dolphins and other marine life. It was so fun! The crew shared ecological insights that made the trip both fun and educational. More info here.

Shop & Stroll: Local Finds Worth Browsing

Beyond the beaches, South Padre Island has lovely shops and a cool art scene, with plenty of locally owned businesses worth supporting. If you’re wondering what to do between beach days, why don’t you go strollin’ through the shops on the island?

  • Ocean Motion — Beachwear and souvenirs that capture the island spirit. I customized a sweatshirt here.
  • Ship Shape — Coastal-inspired home décor and unique gifts. Great kids section! I picked up a little something for Baby B.
  • Charmed — A whimsical shop with a touch of magic — crystals, candles, and coastal charm all under one roof.
  • Art Sea — A creative boutique featuring handmade goods, stylish jewelry and accessories for everyday wear.
  • Karma Books + Coffee — Cozy, bookish charm meets caffeine fix because you get the best of both worlds. It’s perfect for a mid-morning stop.
  • Art Incubator — On the same block as Karma, it’s a community hub for artists and galleries, showcasing a rotating collection of local work. You may even meet an artist-in-residence while you’re there!

Kachet’s Pick: The Hidden Butterfly Garden

One of my favorite discoveries? A somewhat hidden butterfly garden, complete with wind chimes that send the butterflies fluttering. It’s peaceful, whimsical and one of those moments that reminds you why slowing down here is worth it. I came across it while driving down Gulf Blvd. and literally pulled over. There’s also a beach access point there and a picnic table.

If You Go: My Quick Travel Tips

When to Visit
South Padre Island is a year-round destination, but I especially love it in the fall and winter. The weather is still warm, the beaches are quieter and the pace feels just right. If you want a vacation that is jumpin-jumpin, then go during spring break and summer holidays and weekends.

Getting There
The island is easily accessible by car and is within driving distance from several airports: Brownsville SPI International (BRO), Valley International in Harlingen (HRL), and McAllen International Airport (MFL). Road tripping it? From Dallas it’s about a nine hour drive to South Padre Island. From Austin and Houston, it’s about six hours and from San Antonio, it’s about five hours.

Whether you come for the energy of spring break or the calm of fall, South Padre Island offers something special in every season. It’s approachable yet full of surprises, from creative local shops to peaceful natural vistas that take your breath away. Next time I’m on the island, I’ll be back with my family in tow, I know my toddler would absolutely love visiting Sea Turtle Inc.

If you’re curating your own list of things to do on South Padre Island, let this be your starting point! Have fun.
