Why I Attend BHG Stylemaker Year After Year

The Better Homes & Gardens Stylemaker event is one of my favorites year after year (you can read last year’s recap here). It’s always held in September, which coincides with their annual Stylemaker issue that highlights trendsetters in home, food, and design. The event brings in a similar group of people: bloggers, makers, small business owners and BHG editors for a day of learning, networking, and celebration.

But, with all of the many events that bloggers have the chance to attend, and have been to several others myself, here is why I will always keep the Stylemaker event at the top of my list!

The People

Over the years I’ve managed to make some great friends at this event. After keeping up with each other on social media, it’s always nice to reconnect in real life. It’s like we pick up wherever we left off. Plus, there is always a new batch of people there to meet! Why is it important to make connections at an event like this? Well, you never know when there will be a chance to collaborate, or if someone knows someone that is looking to collaborate or partner with someone like you, it could be your next big opportunity. Or, maybe you find your tribe to build a mastermind group. Seriously, community over competition. Having a close network of creative peeps will keep you inspired and maybe open a door or two.

Me and the lovely Liz Lidgett of Adore Your Walls! We met last year, sat in the front row all day, and now we stay in touch!

Facetime With Editors

OK, so I don’t know about you, but until I attended this event, I never thought that editors of national magazines were people I could even speak with and know. But, BHG threw that out of the window. This event is great to chat with editors, get the inside scoop on trends, and even pitch projects. Many of the editors are active on Instagram, and a few I follow, and they follow me back. EIC Stephen and I were hammin’ it up, and he asked me about my recent travels and engagement. I ended up doing a live pitch session with the editors, so fingers crossed that something comes out of it!

The Breakout Sessions

Since the group of attendees is kept to a minimum, the event and the breakout sessions feel very personal. You’re able to ask the questions that you want to ask and because the group is so open and supportive, you feel more confident when doing so. This time around, we got a deep look at how features in the magazine come to life from a simple idea to completion. We also took part in a branding workshop which really came in handy when fine-tuning some things for my relaunch. The food styling workshop was especially interesting because we not only learned tips and tricks from the BHG food squad, but we also had the chance to do some styling ourselves. I mean, I even learned how to finger knit while I was there! Guess everyone is getting a necklace for Christmas.

It was a well rounded day that stimulated all of the senses. Speaking of which…

The Food + Swag

The Better Homes & Gardens team rolls out the red carpet and takes care of you like family. The food is ALWAYS plentiful and ALWAYS amazing. The day started off with breakfast, a beverage station of every drink imaginable, plus a full lunch buffet, midday snacks and cocktail reception with passed apps. The day is a constant party, and the party continues when you get home, because they send you off with a bunch of goodies, too! This year’s swag bag needed its own suitcase! From a skillet to a Cricut LightPad to perfume, the goodies inside hit every touch point of life, and even sparked the interest of TSA (I had a note in my suitcase when I got home).

As you can see, I really love being part of the Stylemaker event!

Thanks to Better Homes & Gardens for having me! If you want to catch up with the attendees of the event, look up #BHGStylemaker on Instagram to discover some amazing creatives! If you are interested in attending next year’s event, keep an eye out on their website in Spring to request an invite!
