The Velveteen Blazer: Two Ways

You know what’s hot for the season and right into winter? Velvet. You know what’s even hotter? A velveteen blazer. I remember my first one. It was 1994 and it was fuschia. My mom said I looked cute in it and it became a staple in my 2nd-grade wardrobe. Well, everything that is old is new again and now that 22 years have passed, I recently became enamored with the fabric again. Talbots came out with an amazing velveteen blazer in a variety of colors this month. It was too hard to choose, but I finally narrowed down my choice to green! I’ve never been one to shy away from color, and I figured it was a fun, versatile way to make an elegant statement.

Talbots came out with an amazing velveteen blazer in a variety of colors this month. It was too hard to make a decision, but I finally narrowed down my choice to green! I’ve never been one to shy away from color, and I figured it was a fun, versatile way to make an elegant statement.

Here’s how I styled it with denim. Because the blazer is in such a bold color and texture, I opted for a relaxed bottom: a boyfriend jean.

The floral popover just punches the color factor right up, but it’s just as easy to pick another bold solid underneath.

A little timid with color? Here are some other casual styling options:

  • High waist jeans with a wedge boot
  • Denim skirt or dress
  • Plain white tee
  • Turtleneck sweater and pencil skirt

Now if you are going to work or out to dinner, this is where the velvet blazer can really shine. Sometimes it’s the chicest and easiest to transition to solid black. It allows the rich color of the blazer to be the star of the show, like with this shift dress.

Now I had to break out these boots, but footwear with this look is super flexible. For the office, throw on some tights and a flat. I’m always a proponent of a pump too, and it doesn’t even have to be black. Red, purple and navy are all great options.
