Basics are so in right now and keeping things simple and interchangeable is the way to the ultimate #OOTD. But, what about when you have to go to work? If you think they are too casual, here are some tips to keep it classy.
Start with a structured base
It’s easy to have more fun with your look once you have secured your base. A slingback heel is a great standard shoe for the workplace and instead of the traditional black slacks, why not mix it up with a fun gaucho? You know gauchos are a TLG fav from this post, but they are made in a variety of colors and styles, so you can definitely find one to work for you (and we’ve included a link to a great starter pair below).
Wear a contrasting top
While I’m a fan of monochrome, wear a top that is contrasting against what your base is – in color or texture. It will add a bit of personality to your basic outfit. Even though it’s a basic, this tweed top stands out against the black gauchos and shoes.
Have fun with accessories
We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again: accessories can make a potato sack look good, so don’t forget them when you’re completing your look. With the neckline on this blouse, a statement necklace fit perfectly. However, don’t be deterred from lariat necklaces or layering chains. Because of how darn cold it is, that blanket scarf can come in handy, too.
And to take the look from work to after work drinks with a friend…
Pile on the denim
A denim jacket adds an approachability factor to your office conservative outfit. We love this boyfriend fit denim jacket from Old Navy as it’s a bit roomier and longer than most, which allows for layering underneath!

My favorite basic is a black cotton/wool blend dress that has a great neckline. I can dress it up with heels & a statement necklace or down with my chunky combat-style boots & a jean jacket. And I love adding a pop of color either with a fun scarf or brown shoes/belt combo!
Sounds fab! You’ve got it down.
HAPPY NEW YEAR – MAY IT BE FILLED WITH PEACE, PROSPERITY AND HAPPINESS! I can’t wait to see your outfits in the ’16 – this one is definitely you!
