My wellness journey has been a combination of movement and the right gear. As someone who has dealt with the symptoms of an autoimmune disorder for nearly two years, I know how important it is to take care of your body as well as your mind to look and feel your best.
For me, one of the things that has been key to my wellness journey is walking. Whether it’s a quick stroll around the block or a longer hike in nature, walking helps me clear my mind, get some fresh air, and stay active.
I didn’t know I loved walking as much until 2020 hit. Not only did it get me out of the house, but it was a way to bond with my new puppy. I remember when he would barely walk half a block and now, when I reach for his leash and lace up my shoes, he does zoomies around the house. Walking has been an easy way to fit movement into my life, dedicated time to call a friend for a catch up, listen to a couple of podcast episodes and witness the fun changes in the neighborhood: new construction, neighbors’ families growing and the seasonal flora.
To be honest, I haven’t made it a priority like I used to. I lost my momentum when I was going through treatment for ITP last spring and summer, and getting my body back in pre-diagnosis shape has been a challenge. After almost a year since my last infusion, I finally feel like I’m getting my normal energy level back, so I’m on a quest to reclaim the things that bring me joy and one of them is daily movement with my dog in tow.
Recently, I’ve begun to increase the frequency and intensity of my walks – or should I say ‘wogs’, I’ve also needed some gear that can keep up with me. That’s where Nike comes in. Nike has long been a leader in athletic apparel, and with a focus on inclusivity and empowering athletes of all shapes and sizes to pursue their fitness goals, I’m excited to have reintroduced some of their products as I kick-start my wellness journey.
One of my go-to Nike products for walking is the Nike Indy sports bra. It’s soft, supportive, and perfect for low-impact workouts. The low-cut neckline and mesh on the back also help keep me cool on hot days, which are plentiful here in Texas. Another Nike product that has been a game-changer for me is the One Leak Protection biker shorts. These shorts are not only comfortable and stylish, but they also have an ultrathin liner that helps prevent leaks when worn as a backup to your usual protection at that time of the month. It’s barely there protection that makes me feel confident and secure.
Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or just starting out on your wellness journey, I encourage you to start where you are and take it a day at a time. If you miss a walk, don’t throw out your whole commitment to yourself. You can hit the start button at any time. Around the block once is better than on the couch. Here are three easy ways to set yourself up for success when it comes to keeping your wellness and movement commitment to yourself (yes, I am taking notes, too).
To kick-start your wellness journey, make sure you have everything you need to make your fitness routine as smooth as possible. This could mean laying out your Nike gear the night before, packing your gym bag and having a snack to fuel up with ready to go.
Choose a time that works for you and add it to your calendar or planner like everything else on your to-do list. For example, you could decide to go for a 30-minute walk every morning before work or hit the gym right afterward. Some people may say that setting the same time every day is the key to success, but I would argue that anytime you can fit it in is good. Maybe it’s the morning sometimes and the evening in others to keep things interesting and less mundane. You do what makes sense for your personality type.
Schedule falling off? I like to find ways to fit movement into everyday activities. Maybe it’s taking the stairs instead of the elevator, parking further away from your destination to add in some extra steps or stretching while waiting for a meal to cook.
Remember, the most important thing is to find what works for you and to make fitness a priority in your daily life. Nike has been a crucial part of that equation, providing me with products that support my fitness goals and a spirit that inspires me to keep going. By incorporating small changes into your routine, celebrating your progress, and being prepared, you can set yourself up for success.
Let’s do this, friends!
