This Mother’s Day is a milestone one, because my This Mother’s Day is a milestone one, because my mom died 20 years ago this past Friday.

I’ll start by saying there’s no medal you get for these milestones. No certificate. No watch. No free dessert at dinner. But I’m here.

And I’m so damn proud of myself!

I’ve come a long way from where I used to be. Those close to me know, and I’m very blessed to have been so supported over the years.

In a way, I’m like, “Yo, Kach…you did it, girl! You finished raising yourself, took care of your grandma, went to college and have been building an amazing life, one full of adventure, love, and opportunity. One that you’re in charge of. And you’re having the last laugh about the internet. Hey mom, all for those hours on AOL paid off!” 🤣

And on the other hand, I’m like, how have I been without a mom this long? I know her spirit is around, but 2002 was a such a long time ago. So much has happened - in our world and in our family.

I still daydream about what life would be like if she were here. She died at 46 and she was looking forward to her next iteration.

A new location.
A career shift.
A search for love after dedicating 14 years to raising me and taking care of so many branches of our family.

The list of “could’ve been’s” are plentiful, as I’m sure many of you that have lost someone you love can relate to.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and because grief tops the list for so many, I wanted to share a different kind of testimony than I have in year’s past.

To the motherless, I see you. I will always hold space in my heart for you. I hope you get through this weekend with peace. If not as much time has passed since you’ve lost your mother, I am sorry. It will get better. It may not be on your time, and you’ll never be over it, but the pain will lessen. ❤️

And to the mothers, never doubt your impact. You are loved, needed and appreciated - forever.
