What kind of blogger bride would I be if I didn’t share my wedding dress shopping experience? 🙂 I have to admit, I didn’t move particularly fast on finding a dress. We’ve had a long engagement, but all of a sudden, it seemed like time moved at lightning speed! With seven months to go, I decided to go to BHLDN to find my ultimate wedding dress and I’m so glad I did!
BHLDN (pronounced Beholden) is your one-stop shop for all things bridal. Under the Anthropologie brand, BHLDN offers not only a full assortment of wedding dresses but also bridesmaid dresses, accessories, and décor for brides that want to make an impact. You have to check out their website and Pinterest.
Visiting the BHLDN Boutique
Shopping at BHLDN is easy! Their website is EVERYTHING, and you can get the best of bridal and decor right from the comfort of your laptop or smartphone, but if you are able to visit a BHLDN boutique, I say do it! There’s nothing like being able to have the full experience. Look up where your nearest location is. For Sacramentans, the two closest are in Walnut Creek and Palo Alto. I went to the Walnut Creek location and had the pleasure of being paired with stylist, Corinne.
After we walked around the bridal area to pull dresses, the crew and I kicked off with a toast with one of my fav little thrills: Sofia! Corinne took me to my dressing room and walked me through the dresses we had pulled as well as a few that I had spotted online and put in my profile. She also had a couple that she thought would look great on me if I was interested in giving them a try. I knew in advance that I didn’t want a strapless dress, so you won’t see any strapless dresses in this post. Sorry, y’all! I know what I like!
The Try-On Sesh
Let me tell you, the time flew by! I knew I had tried on a lot of dresses during my visit, but I marveled at just how many I did in the short period of time. Being candid, I tried on a dress before and had been part of a styled bridal shoot with Ashley, but this time, I had narrowed down my vision on the style of dress I was looking for and was excited to see which one would be the ONE for ME to wear on MY BIG DAY! 🙂
My stylist Corinne was in the fitting room with me to help me get into each gown and make sure I was feeling my best! She also talked through some of the details of each dress before I went out and modeled for my friends.
Get ready to see a lot of dresses! For reference, I am a normal dress size 10/12. 🙂
In case you were wondering, yes, I found my dress!
To keep things as much as a surprise as possible until the big day, I won’t be sharing any photos until then, but, I will tell you, once I put it on, it was pretty unanimous that it was the one because of how I was acting once I tried it on!
Once I had narrowed it down, Corinne took measurements so that we could determine what size I needed to order. My gown is going to need some alterations (most do), so it was helpful to note everything for my first meeting with a tailor. In addition to my preferred dress size and measurements, Corinne also noted all of the accessories I loved! Everything was so easy and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.
Tips for your BHLDN experience:
BHLDN is great because you can shop online and have your items shipped directly to you! If you’re getting ready to go wedding dress shopping and you’re prepping for your appointment, here are a few tips for your dress try-on experience:
Fill out the questionnaire as best as you can.
When you book your appointment online, give them ALL of the details! There is a space for you to link to a Pinterest board, which I did! Share your wedding theme and/or wedding dress board so the stylists can pull things for you in addition to the links you’ve shared to dresses from the BHLDN website.
Since you will be trying on dresses, drink lots of water and try not to eat any foods the day before that may cause bloating. Sure, it’s not the end of the world if you binge on pizza, but you want the most accurate representation of your size when you’re trying on wedding dresses.
Rally Your Tribe
Consider having a few people there with you to give you direct feedback. I know some people like to take their entire crew and family, and maybe that works for you. I know how hard it is for me to make a decision, and too many opinions and tastes would’ve been confusing.
Don’t let the sample size get to you
Samples sizes of dresses are not meant to fit you exactly. I was SO HAPPY that the majority of the BHLDN dresses I fit in, or they had to clip me in. In previous experiences, other boutiques had samples that were so many sizes smaller than I wear, and I couldn’t even see how the back would look on me because of all of the clips. If you have any qualms about that, you can include that in your notes. I’m happy to say that BHLDN really had a lot of different options so their brides-to-be can feel confident in making their choice!
Try on your favorites again before making a decision
If you feel like you have a couple of contenders dress-wise, be sure to try them on again. Take pictures, pay attention to the fit, how you move, and of course, how you feel in it. I tried on a ton of dresses, but when I tried on my top two, it was evident which one was MY dress. OK, going to go cry now…. 🙂
Ready for the BHLDN experience?
In addition to wedding dresses, BHLDN offers wedding décor, bridesmaids, mother of the bride dresses, too. If you are a bride-to-be, a member of a bridal party, or are part of the planning committee, you want to check out all that BHLDN offers to elevate the big celebration. They also have a page full of wedding resources, from how to style your wedding hair, to hosting a fitting party at home!
